Question:
My 9-month-old has never slept very much. He can stay up until 11 p.m. and wake up at 5 a.m. Lately he's been waking up once or twice during the night. Giving him his dummy soothes him, but we have a problem when he wakes up in the morning and stands in his cot and screams. It's hard enough having a child who doesn't sleep, but waking up to his screaming makes me angry. What can I do to get him to stop screaming when he wakes up?
Answer:
I think responding to his screaming just reinforces it. Is there a way to teach him to be more independent when he wakes up? Try putting a favourite toy in his bed and tying his dummy to his wrist, or clipping it to his clothing, so when he wakes up in the morning he can find them himself. And when he wakes up, don't rush to him. Wait and see if he can settle down by himself. None of these may work for a while, but your main goal is to get him to become more independent. He'll learn it over time.
