Question:
How can I increase my energy during the first trimester of my pregnancy?

Answer:
Fatigue is a common symptom of early pregnancy. Getting a good night's sleep is the best way to keep your energy up. Sleep at least seven to eight hours every night, and if you can, take afternoon naps. When you rest, elevate your feet above the level of your heart for at least 15 minutes to increase the blood flow throughout your body. Maintaining a well-balanced diet can also help - eat three meals each day, or smaller, more frequent meals if you have morning sickness. Make sure you eat poultry, cheese and fish for protein, and carbohydrates, such as whole grains, vegetables and fruit. You should also cut down on caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea and colas, which can leave you feeling fatigued. Many women become anaemic, another common source of fatigue, during pregnancy: ask your GP whether you should take an iron supplement along with your prenatal vitamins. And most importantly, exercise and socialise - these activities can energise you. Just don't overexert yourself. Walking, swimming and cycling are fun and safe. And finally, be patient - you should feel less tired by the end of your third month.
