Article Summary
You can subtly encourage playing together with your choice of toys - paints, musical instruments or a dressing-up box can encourage cooperative, creative play. Toy farms, airports or zoos can feed a developing imagination.
CHOOSING SUITABLE TOYS FOR TWO
Most of your older child’s toys will be suitable for the baby each time she reaches a similar age to his when he received the toys. But it is also nice to find toys that encourage both children to play together.
Musical toys are one excellent solution where the baby plays, say, a xylophone and the older brother a toy piano. Painting and collages are also fun things for the two children to do together, each at his level of expertise.
Another good idea is to provide any toys that encourage pretend play: a farm with lots of animals and outbuildings, or a toy zoo, an airport, dress-up clothes or water animals to play with in the bath.
Although pretend play doesn’t really start until about 18 months, encouraged by her older brother’s activities, the little one will imitate what he does and go along with his narrative around the objects of play.
