Turn up prepared to adapt your holiday accommodation to the needs of your family, and stick closely to the bedtime routines established at home. Once the baby's asleep, whispering a story to your older child should help them fall asleep without any trouble.
SLEEP

What happens if you go on holiday and for the first time the two children will need to share a room at night? Will they each disturb the sleep patterns of the other?

First, it is very important to try and keep bedtime routines as close as possible to how they were at home. Second, in case the curtains in the guest-house or hotel are thin and let the sunlight in completely, it’s a good idea to take a sheet of thicker material or even a towel, that you can pin up in the evenings to cut out some of the light so that levels are similar to what they are used to at home. Third, it is wise to get the baby asleep before the older child needs to get into bed. Let him spend some quiet time with his Dad reading a nice storybook to him.

Once the baby is deeply asleep, come in quietly with the older child and whisper a story to him once his head is on the pillow. This is unlikely to disturb the baby and may even serve to give the older sibling the feeling that he is very special. This could be a time to teach him during the day about the fun of learning how to whisper. Research has shown that the mastery of regulating the volume of one’s voice is quite an achievement for a young child; so don’t be surprised if in the middle of whispering to you his voice is suddenly very loud. And, did you know that people who are deaf and use sign language can also regulate the size of their manual signs so that they are the equivalent of a whisper?

Human behaviour is so fascinating; so do enjoy watching how each of your children adapts to the changes when on holiday.
