Article Summary

Don't be afraid to call on friends, relatives and your partner, especially in the first few days after giving birth. This time around, you've got all the extra demands of a toddler too, so you deserve the chance to put your feet up.
DON’T TRY TO BE SUPERWOMAN!

You’re of course feeling very tired but, unlike last time when you might have grabbed a quick nap whenever your newborn was sleeping, this time there’s another little fellow clamouring for your attention at such moments.

Do make sure that your partner takes his full paternity leave. Not only will it enable him to start bonding with the new baby, but it will also allow you or him to spend special time alone with the older sibling. And don’t be shy about calling relatives and friends whenever you are feeling overwhelmed and need some help.

It’s perfectly natural to find the going hard at first, and everyone will understand. Until you’ve established a routine for both children and recuperated from the birth, the first days are obviously going to be somewhat difficult. This is true for all second mums - it really is hard work having two, but the joys that will ensue from watching the developing relationship between your two children will easily outweigh any temporary difficulties.
