FOOD TALK
Maintaining your nutritional reserves, and the importance of good carbohydrates
SHARING YOUR MEALS
Babies are particularly good at getting everything they need via the placenta, sometimes leaving their mother’s own levels of vitamins and minerals low. This is why it is particularly important not to let your body’s reserves deplete during the final months of pregnancy, especially if you are planning to breastfeed.
If you think that your diet be deficient in a particular vitamin or mineral seek professional advice. Your midwife should be able to address any concerns you have, but you can always be referred to a nutritionist if necessary.
COMPLEX IS BEST
Carbohydrates should form the largest part of your diet. But not all carbohydrates are good for you. Simple ones found in white bread, white rice or pasta, refined cereals, biscuits, cakes, sugars and sweets may fill you up and give you a boost of energy, but they offer little in the way of nutrition. It is the complex variety, brimming with minerals, protein and fibre that you should opt for instead. So choose wholegrain bread, and brown rice and pasta, instead of the white varieties, go for high-fibre cereals, bake your potatoes instead of frying them, and steam your vegetable to retain their nutrients.
This will give you and your baby top-quality fuel and help to keep excess weight-gain to a minimum.
